This past Tuesday, 9/13/16, was incredible as we launched our first meeting of the After-School Reading Buddies program. Watching the kids happily get off their bus, excited for reading, was inspiring.

Instead of diving right into our program, this Tuesday was set aside specifically to get to know the children, experience their personalities, and set the foundation for a safe learning environment.
It was a beautiful day to go outside and have some fun. The children enjoyed one round of pass the hula hoop and a few rounds of Duck, Duck goose. It was a great time!
Once coming back to the classroom, children created their all about me pennants, that will soon be displayed around the room. They also created their weekly check-in cards.
Time flew by, and before we knew it parents were at the door.
This week we will begin reading our first book: Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier. Our character trait for the week will be: Helping Others and Giving
Story Background: The story, Beatrice's Goat, is based on the work of Heifer International, an organization that provides animals and training to poor families around the world. You can learn more about this organization by visiting their website at: http://www.heifer.org.
What's the Story? Beatrice dreams of attending the school in her village, but her family can't afford to pay for books and a school uniform. While she holds onto her dream, she helps out with the daily tasks of family life. Her prospects change when her family learns that they will receive a lucky gift -- a goat. Beatrice wonders how a goat can be a gift, but she willingly helps her mother prepare for its arrival. Soon after the gift arrives, Beatrice discovers that the new goat brings gifts of its own and sets off a chain of events that can benefit her whole village.
